JÚLIO RESENDE AND MARIA JOÃO: Fado and Further
Pianist and composer Júlio Resende is one of the most important young artists of the Portuguese jazz scene. After studying jazz in the United States, he released three critically acclaimed albums for the leading Portuguese jazz label Clean Feed. Maria João is the golden voice of Portugal, a singer of fascinating vocal flexibility and improvisation skills. The basis of her music is jazz, but she is interested in Portuguese folklore and traditional and contemporary sounds of Europe, Africa and South America, the avant-garde and electronica. Both musicians will be visiting the Festival for the second time: João had a well-attended concert at Dom sindikata within the main program in 2007, whereas Resende participated in the off-program Jazz and Literature in 2011. Last year, they collaborated for the first time in the new quintet Ogre, which combined jazz and electronica.
