LEE KONITZ & DAN TEPFER
Born in Chicago in 1927, alto saxophone player and composer Lee Konitz was a student of pianist Lennie Tristano. Konitz has directly inspired numerous saxophonists, among them Art Pepper and Paul Desmond. He is a pioneer of cool jazz and one of the last active heroes of the golden jazz decade of the 1950s. During his long career, he has recorded around 150 albums as bandleader and has worked with numerous jazz icons (Stan Kenton, Gerry Mulligan, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus…). This year he received a lifetime achievement award at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival. He first performed at the Belgrade Jazz Festival in 1977, as part of Shelly Manne’s quartet. This time he is joined in Belgrade by the talented young pianist Dan Tepfer (voted in 2010 by JazzTimes for Best New Artist). He is the winner of numerous piano competitions, the most prominent of which is First Prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival Piano Competition (2006).
